Principal Investigator: Keisuke Enokido (Professor, Faculty of Policy Planning and Management)
1. Overview of research results
1.Research overview
This research aims to understand the reality and develop a theory of temporary urbanism, which aims to solve urban problems through temporary or short-term changes in land and space use, as opposed to the traditional idea of urban planning, which aims to complete permanent and fixed urban spaces based on a long-term urban vision.
2. Activities this year
1) Collection of literature on overseas cases and theories
Case studies and theoretical research on temporary urbanism are being conducted in North America and Western Europe, so it is necessary to collect literature from overseas. This year, we have been collecting English-language literature, mainly from the University of British Columbia Library.
2) Field survey
In order to understand the development of temporary urbanism in the waterfront areas that were selected as the target areas for this study, we conducted field surveys by visiting Vancouver (waterfront area), Montreal (riverside area), Quebec City (riverside area), and Toronto (lakeside area).
3) Networking with overseas researchers and practitioners Through the above-mentioned overseas field surveys, we have begun networking with researchers and practitioners in fields related to temporary urbanism.
3. Current results
1) Progress in theoretical research
Through the various English literature collected, we were able to confirm the current state of theoretical research on temporary urbanism overseas.
2) Understanding the current state of temporary urbanism
Through field surveys in the above cities, we were able to gain an experiential understanding of temporary urbanism projects.
