  • Dynamics of Female Labor Force Participation and Work-Life Balance: From Ancient Greece to Modern East Asia

This project focuses on the fact that the views on labor and gender shaped by ancient Greek intellectuals were passed down to Western intellectuals throughout the Middle Ages and modern times, and have influenced modern labor systems and gender norms. In particular, it analyzes the relationship between women's labor participation and declining birth rates in Japan and Taiwan, and explores gender equality and the state of a sustainable society through a reevaluation of unpaid care work. It aims to grasp the changes in the social structures of Japan and Taiwan from a historical and comparative perspective, and to construct a theoretical framework.

  • Aspects of "sustainability" - Focusing on the potential of the concept of well-being

The idea of sustainability in the sense of sustainability makes it possible to set targets and methods broadly. In setting targets and methods, this study will use the concept of well-being, which is used to indicate ideal states, as a clue for discussing sustainability and organize the points of discussion. In doing so, we will focus on the effect of understanding well-being from a medium- to long-term perspective.

  • Current status and issues of temporary urbanism on the waterfront

In contrast to conventional urban planning, which has aimed to create and realize a long-term vision for the city, the idea of temporary urbanism argues that flexible land and space use that changes temporarily or in the short term has a major impact on the formation of modern cities. We will focus on the idea of temporary urbanism and will grasp the actual situation and develop a theory about it, focusing on waterfront districts (urban ports and waterfront areas), where the challenge is to incorporate them into already mature urban center spaces so that they function quickly and effectively.

  • Uncovering the potential for sustainable development in island nations and their mutual relationship with Japan: from the perspective of tourism

Due to factors such as the small size of the country, remoteness from markets, and the impact of natural disasters, Pacific island nations find it difficult to attract foreign investment and strengthen their manufacturing industries, and therefore are required to develop their economies independently by making use of local resources. Fiji is blessed with tourism resources that contribute to its economic development, but it also faces challenges such as a lack of infrastructure and the outflow of human resources. In this study, we will conduct on-site research to uncover the potential of Fiji's tourism industry, and explore Japan's contributions to increasing its appeal and the ideal form of sustainable development based on what Japan can learn from the country.

  • A study of the regularities inherent in models related to traffic congestion

Traffic congestion not only hinders economic activity, but also causes environmental and noise problems, so a solution is needed. In particular, in developing countries, improving transportation infrastructure is essential for economic development, so alleviating traffic congestion is important. Since elucidating the regularity of traffic congestion will lead to fundamental improvements and solutions, this research uses stochastic processes to conduct theoretical research and analysis.

  • Sustainability in Local Communities and Documentary Filmmaking: Weaving History and Creating Society

In modern Japan, where the population decline is accelerating, the sustainability of local communities has become an urgent issue. How can media, especially video media, contribute to the sustainability of local communities? In this study, we explore the process in which documentary filmmakers who record the activities of local communities on film and local residents dig up local memories through collaborations such as filming and screenings, thereby creating a sustainable local community for the future and sharing it locally. We will clarify how documentary filmmaking can be an opportunity for the endogenous and sustainable reproduction of local communities.

We have been researching "creating safe and secure cities and regions" from the perspective of "maintaining current functions" even in the event of a disaster. However, from a secondary perspective, we will study urban function development and maintenance methods to become "resilient cities" that can seize opportunities for development in cities threatened by sudden shocks such as "earthquakes, typhoons, and extreme heat," and chronic stresses such as "low birthrate and aging population, depopulation, and overcrowding," "recession, poverty, and disparity," and "crime and violence," and use these as a catalyst for transformation.
