Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

In the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, we aim to nurture professionals with wide-ranging abilities for addressing problems and issues in local communities and society and supporting society in the future. We welcome students who are highly motivated to contribute to the development of local communities and industries by learning and making use of specialist knowledge about social structures, issues, and possibilities through the study of sociology and social welfare, as well as business-related structures, issues, and potential through the study of economics, commerce, and business management.

Fundamental Qualities for Prospective Students

Admission Assessment Policy

  • For the Selection by School Recommendation and Comprehensive Selection, emphasis will be placed on the interview and documents submitted as part of the application process (personal statement, school record, etc.). See below for more details:
  1. Candidates applying for the Selection by School Recommendation will be selected through an interview and a comprehensive assessment of the documents submitted as part of the application process. When screening the documents, emphasis will be placed on the personal statement/study plan and the school record. The interview will assess the candidates’ academic performance and achievement in extracurricular activities, as well as their motivation for studying and understanding of the educational philosophy of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. It is important for candidates to have a goal that they hope to achieve after graduation as well as a specific plan for independent study to realize that goal. It is also important for candidates to maintain a keen interest in the structures, issues, and potential of the local communities and industries today as they will be required to answer questions designed to confirm whether they have a wide-ranging knowledge of those points.
  2. Candidates applying for the Comprehensive Selection will be selected through a comprehensive assessment of the documents submitted as part of the application process and an interview. When screening the documents, emphasis will be placed on the personal statement/study plan and the school record. For the interview, emphasis will be placed on academic performance, communicative competence, and presentation skills. As with the Selection by School Recommendation, it is important for candidates to maintain a keen interest in topics related to the philosophy of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as they will be required to answer questions designed to check their understanding.
    Also, note that for the Comprehensive Selection for Scholarship Students, emphasis will be placed on the interview for all admission types; however, for the Presentation Type, assessment will focus on whether the candidates excel in their presentation skills and exhibit a wider, deeper knowledge base compared with others; for the Qualifications/Certification Type, assessment will focus on prior acquisition of qualifications and the study plan , with a particular focus on the personal statement, study plan, and the school record; and as for the Recommendations by a Teacher who has graduated from this University, assessment will focus on whether the candidates are well suited to learning in this faculty on the basis of their school records and a short essay; for the Inquiry-Based Learning Type, assessment will focus on evaluating independent activities and capacity for thinking in the process of inquiry-based learning, as well as their motivation and ability to achieve higher-level learning, through an inquiry-based learning report and an oral examination.
  3. The focal points for each admission category are as follows:
    3-1 Selection by School Recommendation
    For all admission categories, emphasis is placed on the personal statement/study plan, the candidate's school record, and, in particular, the interview; however, the additional focal points vary as follows depending on the admission category:
    • Selection by School Recommendation under the Designated Schools System
      Emphasis is placed on the short essay and the letter of recommendation, with a focus on whether the candidate has a strong motivation to study.
    • Selection by School Recommendation under the Open Recruitment System
      Academic Evaluation Category: Weight is given to the short essay and the letter of recommendation, with a focus on whether the candidate has a strong motivation to study.
      Qualifications/Certifications Category: Weight is given to qualifications and certifications obtained and the letter of recommendation, with a focus on whether the candidate has a strong motivation to study as demonstrated by prior acquisition of qualifications.
    3-2 Comprehensive Selection
    For all admission categories, emphasis is placed on the personal statement/study plan, the candidate's school record, and, in particular, the interview; however, the additional evaluation points differ as follows, depending on the admission category:
    • Comprehensive Selection for Scholarship Students
      Presentation Category: Emphasis is placed on the presentation and the short essay, with a particular focus on basic academic skills, capacity for thinking, and ability to express opinions.
      Qualifications/Certifications Category: Emphasis is given to qualifications/certifications and the short essay, with a focus on whether the candidate has a strong motivation to study, as demonstrated by prior acquisition of qualifications.
      Recommendation by a Teacher who has graduated from this University: Emphasis is given to the Personal Assessment Form and the short essay, with a focus on capacity for thinking and independent activities.
      Inquiry-Based Learning Category: Emphasis is given to an inquiry-based learning report and an oral examination, with a focus on whether the candidate has a strong motivation to pursue independent activities and to study.
    • Simultaneous Comprehensive Selection
      Activities Category: Emphasis is placed on the achievements in activities and the short essay, with a focus on the candidate's capacity for thinking and independent activities.
    • General Comprehensive Selection
      Aptitude Test Category: Emphasis is placed on the aptitude test, with a particular focus on the candidate's basic academic skills and a strong motivation to study.
      Qualifications/Certifications Category: Weight is given to qualifications/certifications, with a focus on whether the candidate has a strong motivation to study, as demonstrated by prior acquisition of qualifications.
      Activities Category: Emphasis is placed on achievements in activities and the short essay, with a focus on the candidate's capacity for thinking and independent activities.
    • Culture/Sports Achievement-based Comprehensive Selection Category
      Emphasis is placed on the short essay and achievements in activities, with a focus on capacity for thinking and independent activities.
  • For the General Selection (Individual Examination Category) and General Selection (Standardized Examination Category), emphasis is placed on the result of the scholastic ability test and assessment of application documents such as the candidate's school record, with a focus on whether the candidate has suitable basic knowledge and academic skills. It is important for candidates to acquire a broad knowledge base and develop a strong capacity for thinking, making decisions, and expressing opinions. In addition, selection for scholarship students will focus on whether the candidate possesses a higher level of basic knowledge and academic skills.
