Chiba University of Commerce Going Forward with Educational Reform -Reorganizing the Faculties and Departments towards 2025-

To further develop “practical education,” the distinguishing feature of the learning style of the Chiba University of Commerce, and make it more future-oriented, the Chiba Gakuen Educational Institution is reorganizing the current 5 faculties and 7 departments of the university as follows, starting in the AY2025.

Chiba University of Commerce (from April 1, 2025)

  • Platform for Arts and Sciences (curriculum common to all faculties)
  • Faculty of Commerce and Economics
     Department of Commerce 450 students in each year
     Department of Management 200 students in each year
  • Faculty of Policy Management (TBD)
     Department of Economics 150 students in each year
     Department of Policy Informatics 150 students in each year
  • Faculty of Service Innovation
     Department of Service Innovation 230 students in each year
  • Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
     Department of Humanities and Social Sciences 230 students in each year

From 2025, the current Department of Economics of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics and the Department of Policy Informatics of the Faculty of Policy Informatics will merge and start anew as the Faculty of Policy Management (TBD), consisting of the Department of Economics and the Department of Policy Informatics. Starting also in 2025, the education hitherto carried out by the Faculty of Global Studies will transform into a new, university-wide program for nurturing globally-minded individuals, making full use of the knowledge and experience fostered by the Faculty of Global Studies, which means no new students will be accepted in the Faculty of Global Studies from 2025.

CUC assures all students, including those entering the university in 2024, that the faculty and staff of the university will maintain the high quality and environment of its education, providing the best possible support for the students’ academic studies, campus life, and career choice as they have always been doing.

CUC asks the families of the students, graduates, and others to understand this new, future-oriented reorganization and continue to give us their support.

Ever since it was founded on the principle of nurturing, through practical education, chidoka, individuals with high ethical standards, to meet the needs of society, the Chiba University of Commerce has continued to create new values.

The Chiba University of Commerce was founded in 1928, the year before the Great Depression. Dr. Ryukichi Endo, Doctor of Literature, alarmed by the trend of seeking profit only and feeling strongly that the trend had to be countered, founded the Sugamo High School of Commerce, the predecessor of the Chiba University of Commerce, with the founding spirit of nurturing businesspeople with high ethical standards.

Starting with a single faculty, the Faculty of Commerce, the university has continued to add faculties and departments to meet the changing needs of society and its issues, to develop into a university with 5 Faculties and 7 Departments by 2015. Each faculty offers a solid foundation of the study of theory while, at the same time, placing emphasis on putting theory into practice by providing, in collaboration with local businesses and communities, numerous opportunities for students to learn through "practical education."

To support the special knowledge and skills to be acquired in the faculties, the Platform for Arts and Sciences was established in 2019 to provide a curriculum common to all faculties, mostly for first-year students. The purpose of the Platform is to form the foundation of the students’ studies by nurturing students with high ethical standards and broad, diverse knowledge of the liberal arts.

The socio-economic environment surrounding universities is changing at a very fast pace, including the decreasing population of 18-year-olds, the rapid development of information technology, environmental issues such as climate change, and accelerating globalization. Be that as it may, the most important task of a university continues to be the kind of students it nurtures. In a rapidly changing world, those who are content with the status quo cannot keep up with the changing environment. How can we transform our education into a more future-oriented one, how can we send out more ethically-minded individuals into the world, what kind of studies or systems are needed for that—at CUC, we decided that each and every one of the faculty and staff tackle these challenges as their own in making the transformation towards 2025.

This reorganization will continue to make our founding sprit of "practical education" the basis of our education, and at the same time, prepare our students for the world today by placing importance on the following: acquisition of skills to navigate the rapidly developing Information Technology, contribution to the socio-economic Sustainability of the world, high ethical standards which will earn the Trust of society, and a Global outlook at the issues facing us. To, that end, we will provide state-of-the-art learning in those areas in our advanced program.

CUC will remain flexible in dealing with the social, economic, environmental changes of society, and we are certain this reorganization will enable us to better deal with those changes. We ask you to give us your continuing support.
