Communicating with international students: Hosting a student-planned social event
Faculty of Global Studies
July 20, 2017
On Monday, July 17th, a social gathering with 57 international students was held in the homeroom of first-year students. This social gathering was held as part of the CUC Summer Program, which was held at our university from Sunday, July 16th to Sunday, July 30th, and was attended by students from a variety of countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, France, India, Israel, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, and Korea.
Following an introduction to the Faculty of Global Studies and interviews with participating students, the main event was a game of collecting quiz answers to make bingo. Since CUC students and international students had to cooperate to make bingo, they shared their knowledge and communicated in English, Chinese, and other languages, creating a lot of fun.
Students from Sir Padhampat Singhania University in India were the first to get bingo and were all smiles as they received prizes from Dean. During the free time that followed, the students deepened their interactions by teaching each other Japanese and taking photos together.
This exchange event was planned and prepared in advance by volunteer students from the first to third years so that the international students could enjoy themselves. On the day of the event, they hosted the event wearing yukata and jinbei, livening up the atmosphere.
Tatsuya Yanagisawa, a first-year student who was in charge of planning and running the event, reflected on the event, saying, "I've gotten more accustomed to communicating in English since I first enrolled, so I was able to play the game well with the other students. The students were all friendly and I had fun interacting with them. I was nervous when I did the interview in English as a student representative in front of a large group."
