Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Since attendance is taken in class, do I not need to take attendance at International Division?
No. On days when you have classes, you must stop by International Division and show your student ID to a member of staff to be registered. When renewing your period of stay, the Immigration Bureau may require you to submit a certificate of attendance. Please note that if you do not register at International Division, not only will your attendance days not be counted, but you will also not be able to receive a certificate of attendance.
*The method of confirming attendance is different for graduate school.
*For students enrolled in 2024, attendance at international student classes will be recorded on the attendance certificate.
Can international students also work part-time?
"Study abroad" is a residence status for the purpose of studying, and basically does not allow part-time work. However, if it is unavoidable for your life, you will need to apply for "Permission to Engage in Activities Other Than Those Permitted Under the Status of Residence Permit". International students who receive permission can work up to 28 hours a week. In addition, they can work up to 8 hours a day during holidays (summer, winter, and spring) as stipulated in the school regulations. However, they must have a certificate of long vacation issued by the university. For more information, please contact International Division. Please be aware that there are an increasing number of cases where renewal of the period of stay is rejected if the time has been exceeded.
Where can I get a student certificate, transcript, and health certificate?
It can be issued through a certificate issuing service.
*To obtain a health certificate, you must have undergone a regular health check every spring.
My address or mobile phone number has changed. What procedures do I need to follow?
Please complete the procedure from "Application for Change of Student Registration Information" on CUC PORTAL. Also, if you have changed your address, please obtain a sticker on the back of your student ID card at Student Division and replace it.
Do I need to report if I go back to my home country temporarily?
あります。帰国する前に国際課、教務課に理由、期間を報告することを忘れないようにしてください。また、授業の先生には欠席届を提出してください。
I lost my wallet, what should I do?
I was given a bicycle by a senior colleague. Do I need to go through any procedures?
After having the previous owner complete the registration process, please bring the following documents with you to your nearest bicycle theft prevention registration office (bicycle shop, supermarket, home improvement center, etc.) and complete the registration process.
  1. Bicycle "body"
  2. Residence card
  3. Previous owner's registration card (customer copy) or transfer certificate
  4. Registration fee: 500 yen (tax exempt)
[If you do not have the previous owner's registration card or "customer copy" etc.]
Contact the previous owner, prepare a deed of transfer and submit it to the registry office.
I'm having trouble with my job search.
There is Career Support Center on the second floor of the main building. There are specialized advisors there, so please consult with them. You can also consult with seniors who have already found employment. In addition, there are periods when specialized advisors from Career Support Center are dispatched to International Division so please make use of them.
I don't think I will be able to find a job by the time I graduate. Do I need to go through any procedures?
Yes. You will need to change your status of residence to "Designated Activities". You will need a letter of recommendation from your university, so please come and consult with International Division before you graduate. There are conditions for issuing a letter of recommendation, so please check the bulletin board at International Division.
Are there any tuition fee reduction or exemption systems available for international students?
Yes. There is a system in place that offers annual tuition fee reductions to privately financed international students after an internal screening process. Please see the Tuition Fee Reduction System for Privately Financed International Students for details on eligibility and application procedures.
How can I find out when scholarships are available?
Information will be posted on International Division bulletin board and on the CUC PORTAL.
When will the tuition remittance slip be sent?
The bill will be sent by the Accounting Department in early April and early September every year. Please pay your tuition fees at a bank. Students who fail to pay tuition fees will be subject to expulsion. As a result, they will not be able to apply for tuition fee reductions or scholarships. Please be sure to pay by the deadline.
Can I take a leave of absence?
We do not allow international students to take a leave of absence. However, we may allow special leave of absence in unavoidable circumstances such as illness. If permission is granted due to illness, please submit a medical certificate issued by a medical institution in Japan. Please note that there are cases where visa renewal is not permitted for students taking a leave of absence.
I'd like to be a guarantor.
If you are asked to be a guarantor when you receive a job offer from a company or rent an apartment, university faculty and staff cannot act as a guarantor. Please build relationships with people you can trust during your time as an international student in Japan and ask them to act as your guarantor.
Could you tell me about events aimed at international students?
International Division plans various events throughout the year to make the university life of international students as fulfilling and enjoyable as possible. Please see the Support System for International Students for details.
