Fair Trade Initiatives

Chiba University of Commerce Fair Trade Charter

Dr. Endo Ryukichi, the founder of Chiba University of Commerce, was concerned about the decline of business morality in Japan in the 1920s and wanted to restore it by injecting the samurai spirit. The samurai spirit here is the compassion for others, or benevolence, and is based on the moral values and code of conduct that "cowardice is not acceptable," "the strong must be considerate of the weak," and "morality is more important than money." Based on these ideas, Chiba University of Commerce has set forth the ideal of nurturing "chidoka," and places importance on treating all people equally without discrimination and regarding one's own happiness as the happiness of others.

The founding philosophy of our university is consistent with fair trade, a system in which products made by economically disadvantaged producers are purchased at a fair price, supporting the lives of producers and the growth of society. Therefore, all people who gather at our university, including students, faculty, and staff, should correctly understand fair trade and take active action to promote it.

We will continue to play a leading role in promoting fair trade, striving to create a sustainable society where all people around the world can live with smiles on their faces.
