On February 7th, the CUC100 Wine Project held a launch event for the first batch of “CUC Original Wine,” made using grapes grown on campus.

The CUC100 Wine Project has been working since January 2019 with the aim of brewing "CUC original wine" produced in Kokufudai, Ichikawa City, in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the company's founding in 2028.

In September 2022, 46 kg of grapes (Muscat Bailey A) harvested on campus were added to 254 kg of grapes from Yamanashi Prefecture to make a total of 300 kg, which were brewed by Shirayuri Brewing Co., Ltd. 300 bottles of original wine have been completed. Our university is the first in Chiba Prefecture to brew wine from grapes grown on campus. The resulting Japanese wine is characterized by its fresh, clean, dry taste.

Our school's vines are still young and the yield is not large, but we aim to increase the yield in preparation for our 100th anniversary and to complete an original wine that is 100% produced in Kokufudai, Ichikawa City.

The naming and label design for the first original wine was solicited from students, faculty, staff, and alumni. From 12 submissions, Tomoki Hiraoka, a first-year student in Department of Business Administration the School of Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration was selected as the winner.

Student comments

I like making Italian food using wine and processing photos, so I decided to apply after seeing the notice on campus. My grandfather graduated from this university, so I created a vintage-style design that gives a sense of history, as this is a wine for the 100th anniversary. I researched the activities of the CUC100 Wine Project and various wines, and since many wine names have characteristics of the place of production, I named it "Campus Vineyard" in French to emphasize that it was made at the university. I am very happy that it was selected, and it has given me confidence. I would like to deepen my studies in creative fields in the future.
