The "University Student Awareness Survey Project (FUTURE2018)", in which third-year students from Faculty of Service Innovation Yoshizawa Isamu, Kobayashi Kenta, and Kato Daichi participated, held a press conference on Friday, November 30th, 2018 to announce the results of a survey on "University Student Relationships and Character."
The "University Student Awareness Survey Project" is being conducted with the aim of providing students with a practical opportunity to learn about advertising and marketing research. Volunteer university students studying in advertising and marketing seminars are participating in the project, under the guidance and support of the Tokyo Advertising Association, which is the organizer of the project.
The 24th project was formed in April this year by 21 students from seminars on advertising and marketing at our university, Aoyama Gakuin University, Komazawa University, Sophia University, and Senshu University. Yoshizawa, Kobayashi, and Kato, who participated from our university, are researching marketing communication in the seminar of Associate Professor Daigo Matsumoto Faculty of Service Innovation.
As a result of the survey on the theme of this issue, "The Relationships and Characters of University Students," we found that in the social media era, university students place importance on direct interaction and place importance on "attention, consideration, and reading the mood" so as not to stand out from the community. To that end, we also found that they use different "characters" such as their words, actions, and behavior depending on the group.
According to the survey, most university students use different characters, and even those who are not aware that they use different characters use different actions. It may not seem like a good idea to change your attitude or behavior depending on who you are talking to, but the results also showed that for university students, "characters" are not "masks," but parts of "themselves" that are born out of the relationships they develop with people who have different personalities and values.
It is natural to use different "characters" and they are essential for building comfortable human relationships. We conclude that what university students are looking for is the establishment of a new form of individuality, a "character identity."
Participating in the University Student Opinion Survey Project (FUTURE2018)
At first, I participated without much thought, but in the end, I presented the results of my research as one of only six presenters selected from the participating universities. By working with students from other universities, I was able to realize that I couldn't do things I thought I could do, and that I had areas to improve, which was a great benefit. I was able to ease the tense atmosphere during group work, and people around me called me a mood maker. We had meetings every week until late at night...I made friends who I still keep in touch with even after the project was over, so I'm really glad I participated.
Isamu Yoshizawa, 3rd year student Faculty of Service Innovation (graduated from Kasai Minami High School)
I knew about this project when I was choosing my seminar, and I participated with great enthusiasm. However, at first I felt the barrier between universities and was worried, but after many meetings, we were able to work together as a team. In preparation for the press conference, I supported the presenter as a buddy. I revised the manuscript based on the opinions of my advisor and gave advice to the presenter. I'm not the type of person who would speak up, but looking back after it was over, I feel that I've grown a lot.
Kenta Kobayashi, 3rd year student Faculty of Service Innovation (graduated from Funabashi Keimei High School)
After listening to the talks from my seniors, I thought I could improve my level and decided to participate. At first, I was worried about what I could contribute because the level of students from other universities was so high, but through the camp I was able to proactively express my opinions. I thought I was good at thinking things through logically, but I also realized that I am good at coming up with catchy words, which is a new strength of mine. I was in charge of creating the presentation materials for the press conference. By taking this activity seriously, I was able to gain confidence in myself.
Daichi Kato, 3rd year Faculty of Service Innovation (graduated from Sakura Higashi High School)
