2018 University of the Highlands and Islands Summer Overseas Language Program Application Guidelines

1. Training Period
Saturday, August 4th, 2018 to Sunday, August 26th, 2018 (22 days) (planned)

2. Training location
Perth College, University of the Highlands and Islands (Scotland, UK)

3. Number of applicants
15 people (minimum number of participants: 2)

4. Eligibility
(1) Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate program in the 2018 academic year, in good health, and be proactive and cooperative in all they do.
(2) People who are interested in English and British culture and history
(3) Those whose course status will not affect supplementary classes or re-examinations after August 5

5. Training Costs
Approximately 200,000 yen + airfare approximately 200,000 yen (estimated)
*Training fees may change significantly due to fluctuations in exchange rates.
As of January 15, 2018, 1 pound is approximately 152 yen

Training expenses will be subsidized up to 120,000 yen per person. However, if there are more than 10 subsidy recipients, the subsidy amount will be divided by the number of participants. Subsidies will be paid after participants have participated in all pre- and post-study training, orientations, presentations, and other activities instructed by International Center, submitted all required documents by the deadline, and obtained a training completion certificate. If participants fail to comply with any of these requirements, no subsidy will be paid.

<What is included in the training fee>
(1) Tuition: Tuition (including training application fee)
(2) Extracurricular activities: Expenses for cultural activities and tours related to Scotland
(3) Airfare: Economy class (including airport facility fees, local departure taxes, etc.)
(4) Accommodation and food expenses: Homestay expenses (including three meals a day)
(5) Travel expenses: Travel expenses from Edinburgh Airport to Perth College and back

<Not included in the training fee>
(1) Travel procedure fee: Passport acquisition fee
(2) Overseas travel insurance: You must enroll in an overseas travel insurance program designated by the university.
(3) Transportation expenses: Local transportation expenses (round trip between homestay and Perth College) and round trip transportation expenses from your home to the airport (Narita or Haneda)
(4) Personal expenses: pocket money, telephone charges, etc.

6. Credit Accreditation
Participants in the training will be awarded the designated credits if their training results are recognized through the submission of a training completion certificate (including a report card) and a report.

School of Policy and Information Studies "Overseas Foreign Language Training I" or

Faculty of Service Innovation "Overseas training" 2 units
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences "Overseas Cultural Training" 2 units
Faculty of Global Studies No credit transfer

7. Notes
(1) Driving (cars or motorcycles) is not permitted during the training period.
(2) One of the purposes of this training is to learn about British culture. Please make sure to prepare thoroughly in advance so that you can understand and adapt to the culture of the place you will be visiting.
(3) If, after being accepted, you fail to submit documents to International Center by the deadline or attend the designated orientation, you will be asked to withdraw from the program.
(4) This training will be led by faculty and staff of our university. Please follow the instructions of the leader and staff of the University of Highlands and Islands on-site. In addition, this training will be conducted jointly with students from other countries and universities, so please act with the awareness of being a Chiba University of Commerce student.
(5) Participants will be required to submit a health certificate. Please make sure you have a health check-up in the spring.

10. Application Method and Deadline
Please fill out and submit the application form available at International Center (1st floor of the main building). Applicants will be interviewed to determine whether they are able to complete immigration procedures on their own and have sufficient English language skills to live in a homestay.
