A paper published in 2001 by Yukihiko Harashina President has now been reprinted in the 50th anniversary issue of the international journal Built Environment. Harashina President is the only Japanese author. This commemorative issue includes 14 papers selected from more than 1,000 papers published in the journal.

The reprinted paper, "A New Stage of EIA in Japan -Strategic Environmental Assessment-," is a pioneering study that looks at the introduction of strategic environmental assessment (SEA) in Japan, detailing the domestic and international situation at the time and future possibilities. EIA refers to the conventional environmental assessment currently practiced, while SEA is a new assessment. This paper marks an important step in Japanese environmental policy, and SEA is now attracting renewed attention.

Built Environment is a traditional academic journal in environmental research, and enjoys a certain reputation and influence in related fields, based on the number of citations of published papers. The 14 papers included in the 50th anniversary issue are divided into seven categories: Sustainability and the Environment, Urban Design, Inclusion, The Compact City, Technology, Regional Perspective, and Transport, and President 's paper was selected in the "Sustainability and the Environment" category.

President Hara commented, "I am extremely honored that this paper has been republished, and as a researcher, I am very pleased. At the same time, I am also very aware of the challenges in tackling current environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity, and plastic pollution. SEA is effective in selecting policies and plans for these issues. I hope that this paper will serve as an opportunity to think about new steps toward the future."
