Exchange event with local students - Visit to Asia Pacific University (APU)

APU訪問

The students visited APU, a partner university, and held an exchange event. They communicated while exchanging souvenirs brought from Japan, and deepened their friendships by playing origami games and English vocabulary bingo. This exchange visit to APU, where students from 120 countries around the world study, was a fulfilling opportunity to experience different cultures.

Experiencing everyday life in Malaysia: Fieldwork in Kuala Lumpur

クアラルンプール市内フィールドワーク

The participants split into small groups and visited various spots in Kuala Lumpur. They visited mosques, Hindu temples, the Petronas Twin Towers, and other attractions, before taking the subway and bus to their destination, a restaurant. By walking on foot, they were able to experience the diverse cultures of Kuala Lumpur.

Learning about Japanese companies expanding overseas - Visiting Perodua

プロドュア訪問

We visited Perodua, an automobile manufacturer that is a joint venture between Japan's Daihatsu Motor Co. and Malaysian capital. After listening to an overview of the company and the Malaysian market, we observed part of the automobile assembly process. We also had the opportunity to hear from Japanese people working there about the joys and difficulties of working there.

Learning about Japan-Malaysia relations: Visit to the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia

在マレーシア日本大使館訪問

We visited the Japanese Embassy in Malaysia. Staff members explained about Japan-Malaysia relations, as well as the economy, culture, customs, and education, which helped us deepen our understanding of Malaysia. We also had the opportunity to learn about the role of the embassy and the work of its staff.

Experience local life - Kampung Visit (rural visit)

カンポンビジット

The students visited a farming village (kampung) on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, where they were able to experience the local culture and lifestyle of the people. After touring the coffee and rubber trees and the manufacturing process, they split up into groups to have lunch at home, and deepened their understanding of different cultures by playing traditional Malaysian games and studying the Malay language.

As this was my first time abroad, I was very anxious at first. However, once I actually visited, I was able to feel the differences between Japan and Malaysia, a multi-ethnic country. The most memorable experience was the kampung stay (rural experience). I was very happy to be able to communicate with gestures even though we didn't speak the same language. I also deepened my friendships through the training. I would like to make use of this experience in my future university life.

Sasaki Reika (graduated from Yachiyo Higashi High School)

What I noticed in Malaysia was that the local people have different ways of thinking than Japanese people. For example, in Japan it is normal to be there five minutes early, but in Malaysia this is not the case, and it is not uncommon for people to be more than 30 minutes late to work. There are other countries like this that have different ways of thinking from Japan, so I would like to study at Faculty of Global Studies, deepen my understanding, and communicate with people from many different countries.
