Strategic knowledge development
Today, business in Japan is at a major turning point. Intensifying competition under globalization, structural changes in society and the economy, the impact of unknown technologies, and the intensification of global environmental issues are shaking corporate activity to its very core. At the same time, fundamental problems are arising within business itself, such as confusion over the philosophy and purpose of business, organizational fatigue, and stagnation in new ventures. Furthermore, with the rise of non-profit businesses, the boundary between economic and social activity has become unclear, and the meaning of business itself has expanded significantly.
In these times, what is required in business is neither the traditional fixed, fragmented knowledge nor short-term techniques. What is required is the systematic development of knowledge with a strategic perspective that accurately organizes problems and solves them effectively and realistically from multiple perspectives, based on a clear understanding of the significance and potential of business in the future.
In this sense, the Commerce Course aims to become a center for the creation and education of knowledge for the new era of business by effectively utilizing the three-field structure of commerce, business administration, and accounting that it has had since its inception in 1977.
To this end, this course develops the study of strategy as a system. Strategic thinking is not limited to business, but refers to the formation of consciousness and behavior that recognizes the environment from a broad perspective and attempts to deal with it systematically from the perspective of long-term goals and results when taking a subjective standpoint.
The word "strategic" has been widely used up until now, but the knowledge system for making it a reality has not been developed in Japan, as is clear from the current emergence of various problems in our country. What is essential to the formation of strategic knowledge is the development of a comprehensive approach that dissects and reintegrates reality in a multifaceted way.
Each of the lectures and seminars in this course is an attempt to develop a strategic approach, and aims to create new strategic knowledge by integrating the fields of commerce, management, and accounting.
Participatory knowledge formation
This course aims to achieve results as an educational forum through its role as a place for the research and development of strategic knowledge. Education here means forming abilities through active participation in the development of strategic academics, whether one is working as a member of society trying to solve problems in one's own organization, starting a business or managing a business, or aspiring to pursue future academic fields of problem discovery and problem solving as a researcher or professional. If one is simply seeking knowledge, it may be possible to absorb it through a static and passive process. However, strategic "knowledge" can only be formed and embodied through an active process based on dynamic and proactive awareness and action.
What you will learn in this course is nothing less than an experience of knowledge creation, where Professor and students work together in a highly intensive workshop-like environment to propose new possibilities for solving problems in business in Japan.
