Rediscover the wonders of Japan
This is a three-day, two-night program where you can learn about Amami's nature, culture, history, industry, and more.
The purpose of conducting fieldwork in Amami is to understand the importance of "learning well about one's own country" in international exchange and to rediscover its wonderfulness. Rather than talking about Japan only through life in the suburbs of Tokyo, students will come into contact with the history and culture nurtured by the nature of Amami, which has a unique ecosystem even within Japan, and learn about Japan, which is being promoted to the world, from every angle.
What is Amami Oshima?
Amami consists of eight inhabited islands located in the southern part of Kagoshima Prefecture, the largest of which is Amami Oshima. If the Amami/Ryukyu Islands, which are on the tentative list of World Heritage sites, are registered, they will become Japan's fifth World Heritage site after Yakushima, Shirakami-Sanchi, Shiretoko, and the Ogasawara Islands, and are sure to attract attention from both within Japan and overseas.
The beautiful beaches where sea turtles come to lay their eggs. The pristine subtropical rainforests found in only a limited number of places in the world. They are home to plants and animals unique to Amami, including the Amami rabbit, a nationally designated natural monument. Amami has long been a transit point for transportation and trade, where people and cultures from the south and north have come and gone, and the unique culture that developed there has been carefully passed down to the present day.
