Overseas Freshman Camp

The first step to becoming a global talent

Students in Faculty of Global Studies begin their overseas training in their first year.
To acquire international culture, it is necessary to have not only academic knowledge but also knowledge gained through experience. By experiencing foreign cultures and interacting with local people from an early stage after enrollment, students will understand the significance of acquiring international culture and will be highly motivated to continue their studies.

How to study at an overseas freshman camp

事前学修 現地研修 事後課題

Before the overseas Freshman Camp, students will begin pre-study before departing. They will learn about the preparations for the training, the local situation in the country they will be visiting, and its relationship with Japan, and will have the opportunity to interact with other students through group work.
The culture shock experienced through experiences such as coming into contact with local history and culture that was unfamiliar to them and interacting with local students makes them realize the importance of seeing the world with their own eyes and increases their motivation for their subsequent studies.
After returning home, participants will compile a report on their experiences and findings.

Learning about Japanese companies expanding overseas - Visit to Ajinomoto Thailand

タイ味の素訪問

I had the opportunity to visit Japanese companies that are expanding globally and hear about the background of their overseas expansion and the stories of their expatriates. In particular, during the roundtable discussion with the expatriates, I was able to hear many honest opinions about the rewards and difficulties of working overseas.

Learn about Thai culture ~ Wat Arun and Wat Pho

パンヤピワット経営大学訪問

The majority of Thai people are Buddhists, and we visited temples in Bangkok to experience their culture. Buddhism is deeply rooted in the lives of the Thai people, and it was an opportunity to learn about a culture that is different from Japan.

Learning about Japan-Thailand relations: Visit to the Japanese Embassy in Thailand

プロドュア訪問

In order to help students understand Thai-Japanese relations, we had a lecture by Mr. Tsuyoshi Uchida of the Japanese Embassy in Thailand. Students asked questions about the economic and cultural differences between Thailand and Japan, and he spent a lot of time answering their questions.

Exchange event with local students ~ Interacting with students from Panyapiwat University of Management

We had an exchange meeting with students from Panyapiwat Institute of Management, our partner university, and conducted fieldwork in the city. Not only did we have exchanges in the classroom, but we also exchanged opinions on differences in culture and customs while conducting fieldwork in Bangkok. Afterwards, each group presented their findings in a presentation session, making it a fulfilling program.

現地学生との交流会
現地学生との交流会

As this was my first experience abroad, I was a little nervous about going to an unfamiliar environment, but through the Freshman Camp I was able to improve two things: my ability to communicate in English and my proactiveness. Although I had interactions with Thai students in Japanese, I also used English during fieldwork in Bangkok, so I was able to naturally improve my ability to think and communicate in English. Until high school, I felt uncomfortable standing in front of people and making presentations, or interacting with a large group of people, but by attending department introductions and asking questions and interviewing local students, I was able to feel less uncomfortable and be able to speak and act on my own. I plan to use these experiences to advance my research on studying abroad in my second year.

Miu Kato (graduated from our affiliated high school)

During the fieldwork in the city and the exchange with the students from Panyapiwat University of Management, I was very impressed by how they tried to help each other and understand each other, and it was a good opportunity to experience the fun and difficulty of communicating with people of multiple languages. I also performed with guitar and sang at the exchange, and although I was very nervous, the students from Panyapiwat University of Management clapped along and got excited, so it was a very good experience. This training in Thailand was my first time abroad, but I was able to increase my background knowledge through prior study, and I was able to participate in the training with peace of mind thanks to the generous support from the university professors and JTB tour guides. In my future university life, I would like to take advantage of the new perspective and flexibility I gained through this training to challenge myself to various new things and act enthusiastically towards my future career.
