Megumi Sakai Seminar (Accounting, Auditing, and Accountability Studies)

Understand the essence of accounting and aim to become a trusted business person!

Research Themes

Every company has a responsibility to perform accounting. This responsibility is called accountability. If no one fulfills their accountability, they will not be trusted by those around them. In this seminar, we will study accounting and auditing, which are practices related to accountability. In classes in the second and third years, students will deepen their learning of accounting by reading accounting books and academic papers, deciding on their own themes and doing group work, and listening to lectures by accounting professionals who are actually active in society. In the fourth year, each student will select a theme that interests them and write a thesis. The thesis themes are diverse, including accounting research and audit research, as well as research on corporate scandals, services, sports, entertainment, and projects that the student has participated in.

Activities

This seminar respects the autonomy of students. Therefore, I think the classes are held in a free atmosphere. In addition, we provide opportunities to interact with students from other years and other universities, so one of the features of this seminar is that many students have a wide range of interactions with a variety of people.
Every year, we hold a joint seminar camp with other universities during the summer vacation period. Since second and third year students from three to four universities participate in the joint seminar camp, the number of participants can sometimes exceed 100. The research theme, operation method, and venue are all decided by students through discussion among themselves (in 2021, the camp will not be held to prevent infection, and a four-university joint research meeting with Aomori Public University, Ishinomaki Senshu University, and Kitakyushu City University will be held remotely).
In recent years, we have also been conducting audits of undergraduate student projects. In 2021, we cooperated with the Party Project and the Sports Business BB Project, and all third-year students conducted the audit.

The biggest feature of Sakai Seminar is that students can freely decide the field they want to study. The scope of accounting is wide and diverse, but we, the 10th class, chose internal audits as our research theme, and in the fall semester of our third year, we carried out an internal audit of a party project. It was our first attempt, so we had many difficulties, but in the end we were able to create a good report, and we are satisfied with it. In the future, we hope to make use of what we have learned in the seminar and become active as accounting professionals.

In Sakai Seminar, activities are student-led, and seminar members can cooperate and enjoy learning. Accounting is often thought to be difficult, but we learned the importance and fun of accounting through corporate analysis and internal audits of projects. In addition, students who wish to do so gather outside of class hours as a sub-seminar to study for the Nissho Bookkeeping Certification Examination. In the future, I hope to find a job in the financial industry and make use of the accounting I learned in Sakai Seminar even after I enter society.
