Daisuke Miyata Seminar (Algorithms and Programming)

Let's run the computer

Research Themes

Computers are surprisingly inflexible, and will not work properly unless you give them detailed instructions on how to do things. The steps you give a computer are called an algorithm, and if the algorithm is bad, the computer will stumble. Research into algorithms involves thinking about how you can get a computer to do what you want it to do, or whether there is a better way.
In the seminar, we learn about algorithms and develop games and other useful apps.

Activities

  • The graduation research of a seminar student has been released as an iPhone app called "Gathering Now Kanto."
  • Outstanding graduation research may be presented at an academic conference.
  • We hold social gatherings several times a year.

The best thing about Miyata Seminar is that we are allowed to take the initiative in doing what we want to do. If we suggest something we want to do to the professor, he or she will incorporate it into the seminar. Also, when we do assignments, we do it in groups, so even if you're not good at computers, someone in your group can help you, making it easier to demonstrate your strengths. When you do assignments in a group, you can easily make friends within the seminar. If we plan dinner parties or trips, the professor will also be happy to participate.
