Satoshi Ono Seminar (Learning Disaster Prevention from Games and Data)

Disaster Prevention @ Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration with Games & Data Science

Research Themes

Although it is unusual for a seminar taught by an information professor, this seminar aims to understand the theme of "disaster prevention" using "data science" and "gaming". Some students may wonder why disaster prevention is being taught in Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration, but disaster prevention is a comprehensive field that is being tackled not only in the natural sciences but also in the humanities and social sciences. Of course, commerce, economics, and business administration are also involved.
In this seminar, students will deepen their learning by using data processing and game development as tools, with the aim of understanding disaster prevention not only from the perspective of everyday life, but also from a social and management perspective.

Activities

This seminar has only just begun, as it has accepted its first batch of students from the 2021 academic year. Here, I would like to outline the general schedule. In the fall semester of the second year, immediately after joining, students will learn the basics of gaming and data processing, as well as the underlying "systems thinking" through group work. From the third year onwards, students will be free to set a theme based on a keyword chosen by each student (individually or in a group), and will deepen their understanding through game development and data science.
Whether it's gaming or data science, we can't ignore the facts (what's happening), so our activities will naturally involve not only classroom activities, but also activities with people and companies outside the university, such as outside the classroom and online interview surveys. We also plan to provide opportunities to expand our network through joint seminars with other universities.
