Takashi Ando Seminar (Accounting Theory and Practice)

Active seminars for learning "practical learning" (learning that lives and is put to use)

Research Themes

Accounting is a "practical science." Put simply, "practical science" means studying lively, real-life stories. How can students grow by studying these stories? The answer is simple: "They will be able to adapt well to the real world."
In particular, the field I am researching, "management accounting," is a research area that forms the foundation of corporate systems.
I hope that you will all acquire the ability to keenly discern the fundamental principles of corporate activity.

Activities

In the Ando seminar, we will think together about how to utilize the knowledge you have acquired in your first-year classes.

  1. Interviews with case companies
Basically, each student will access the companies that interest them and write their graduation thesis based on the raw data. They will also jointly research trends that are common to many companies.
  2. Development of in-seminars (interactions with seminars at other universities)
We are planning to have exchanges not only with students from Chiba University of Commerce but also with students from other universities. Through guidance from professors from other universities, students will be able to acquire a wider range of knowledge and skills.
  3. The basics are one-on-one instruction
The Ando Seminar is characterized by the close relationship between students and teachers. Through communication, students become aware of their own concerns and are able to decide on the topic of their graduation thesis with their own consent.

As part of my seminar activities, I went to Panasonic headquarters for an interview in my third year. My research topic was "Panasonic's Strengths." After reviewing the literature, I came to the conclusion that the company's strengths lie in its accounting department.
However, the literature did not provide much information about 1. the situations in which the accounting department actually works, and 2. the extent of their authority. Therefore, I was able to learn about the actual development of management strategies through the interviews, which was very informative. Furthermore, I presented the contents of the interviews in the seminar, which allowed me to learn about new ways of thinking and values.

I feel that Ando's seminar has helped me acquire the ability to act independently. In the spring semester of my second year, all of my seminar members studied a single textbook. I believe that giving presentations helped me develop my ability to summarize and speak. In the fall semester of my second year, each member first researched interesting companies online. What I gained through this was the ability to become aware of my own interests by acting independently. The theme I am particularly working on is "philosophical management," a management style that allows employees to work enthusiastically and allows the company to continue growing in the long term. The style of fostering an attitude of taking on everything independently is similar not only to the research topic, but also to Ando's seminar's teaching philosophy.
