Shinji Tahara Seminar (Japanese Economy and Economic Statistics)

Understanding the workings of the Japanese economy

Research Themes

Using economic statistics such as national accounts and input-output tables, we analyze changes in industrial structure and economic growth, mainly focusing on the Japanese economy. The seminar starts by learning basic economic concepts and terminology such as consumption, investment, production, and income, and then mainly involves analyzing statistical data for a region or municipality chosen by the students, and reading government white papers such as the Economic and Fiscal White Paper. In addition, in order to understand current political, economic, and social topics, the seminar also includes reports on current affairs.
While it cannot be said that economics will be directly useful in working life after graduation, I believe that the logical thinking and economic thinking that you acquire during the course of your studies will definitely be useful in your future life.

Activities

In regular seminars, we have a designated presenter each time and we report on the reports and graduation theses we have prepared, as well as the books and materials we have been reading. In preparation for job hunting and life in society, we place emphasis on being able to explain what you have researched in your own words and discuss it. We also encourage non-academic activities such as extracurricular activities and travel to broaden your horizons. Nowadays, job hunting starts earlier than usual, so we want students to have a variety of experiences while they have time in their second and third years.
