Kensaku Tomuro Seminar (Thinking about working and making people work in Japanese companies)

Let's think together about social systems, problems, and solutions.

Research Themes

In recent years, the terms "working poor" and "black companies" have frequently appeared in the news and newspapers in Japan, and the way people work and are employed in Japanese companies has become a major social issue. In this seminar, we will clarify the actual situation of the problematic ways people work and are employed in Japanese companies, and examine why such problems have arisen. In doing so, we will attempt to examine the issue based on a wide range of knowledge, including business administration, economics, law, history, and sociology. We will also place emphasis on an international comparative perspective.

Activities

In this seminar, a textbook is assigned and classes are conducted while reading the textbook in a group. At the first seminar, it is decided which seminar student will report on which chapter of the textbook. From the second seminar onwards, each presenter will prepare and distribute a summary and give their report. The contents of the textbook are discussed together based on the reports. Literature related to the class content will be introduced from time to time. As for the writing of a graduation thesis, students are asked to consider the theme, chapter structure, outline of each chapter, research method, etc. from the third year. Thorough guidance is provided on how to find literature, how to conduct research, how to write a thesis, etc.
