Ryohei Negishi Seminar (Research on Financial Reporting)

If you understand the numbers, you understand the company. If the numbers change, the company changes.

Research Themes

It is said that there are three essential skills for doing business: language, IT, and accounting. These three skills are the basis for smooth business communication and important decision-making.
In the Negishi seminar, students will develop the following three skills through the study of financial reporting (analysis of financial statements and accounting information).

  • Ability to read numbers (e.g., why was this company able to achieve record profits)
  • Ability to use numbers (e.g., which company in the same industry is the most efficient in earning money)
  • Ability to think about numbers (e.g., how should this company be managed in the future?)

Armed with these three skills, you will be able to organize and understand your business more objectively, and be able to logically explain problems and solutions.
Why not take the Negishi Seminar and add your own weapons to the knowledge of bookkeeping and business you are learning at university?

Activities

In the second year, students learn the basic theory of accounting. Specifically, seminar students give reports on the basic theory of accounting and hold discussions with the whole class. This allows students to acquire the skills necessary for conducting research in the seminar, such as how to write reports and how to give presentations.
In the third year, students learn how to analyze financial statements and report on their analysis of financial statements of companies that interest them. They also participate in the Nikkei Stock League, sponsored by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. They are divided into groups and asked to work on the assignment, "What kind of companies should we invest in from an accounting perspective?"
In the fourth year, students will compile their own research topic into a graduation thesis as the final achievement of their student life.

Student Voices

Raku Suzuki Department of Commerce
In the Negishi seminar, we study corporate analysis. The main activities are conducting financial statement analysis for one company through individual and group work and making presentations. In addition, we are engaged in various activities such as facility visits to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, joint seminars with other universities, and participation in the Nikkei Stock League.
Aside from studying, there are many events such as camping trips and dinner parties where you can get to know each other on a daily basis, so I feel that this is a seminar where you can learn in a very enjoyable way.

Department Department of Commerce Shuri
I am also studying for the Nissho Bookkeeping Level 1 qualification, and because Negishi Seminar is an accounting seminar, the content I learn in the seminar is also applicable to bookkeeping knowledge, allowing me to study both more efficiently.
In addition to feeling rewarded by group and individual presentations and participating in the Nikkei Stock League, you can also have fun at the regularly held social gatherings and seminar camps, so this is a great option for people who want to enjoy and enrich their seminar activities.
