Saki Onuma Seminar (Organizational Behavior Research)

Visualize the "vague" and acquire the ability to speak with numerical evidence

Research Themes

This seminar will cover topics related to leadership, teamwork, motivation, job satisfaction, and other emotions and behavioral patterns that arise when we work within organizations. For example, within the organizations you belong to, you may have wondered, for example, "What type of leadership is related to team performance?" or "Why isn't motivation increasing?" We will consider and analyze these kinds of questions about the psychological phenomena that surround us, focusing on various organizations, including companies, based on the ideas and knowledge built up by our predecessors.
We cannot see into people's hearts. However, when we communicate with others, we tend to make predictions such as "I guess it's something like this" or "I think it's like this from experience." We will acquire the ability to visualize this "guessing" and speak about it with numerical evidence.
The topics covered in this seminar will teach you ways of thinking that will be useful in the workplace and in everyday life, both for those entering the workforce and as you continue to build your career. We hope that you will develop an understanding of your own mind and the minds of those around you, and an attitude that will help you apply this knowledge to real-world phenomena.

Activities

First, students will acquire the basic skills necessary for research activities, such as how to write academic documents and how to create presentation materials. Next, students will learn how to conduct surveys necessary for analyzing psychological phenomena, and then they will learn how to analyze data using Excel.
Once students have learned the basic methods, they will put them into practice in team research activities to internalize and output what they have learned. As a culmination of their studies, they will participate in presentations both on and off campus.
Survey research and data analysis require perseverance and creativity. Even if you can't do it alone, you should continue to learn by helping each other out with your colleagues. It's also important to know the background behind the numbers, so make sure to read business magazines and news regularly to broaden your horizons.
