Ryo Ogawa Seminar (Beginning with R for Empirical Analysis of Commerce, Economics, and Management)

Learn scientific thinking while interpreting empirical research in commerce, economics, and management!

Research Themes

In the business world, decisions of various kinds are made on a daily basis. In such situations, it is important to be able to make decisions based on data (objective evidence) rather than relying solely on experience, intuition, and ideas. In order to acquire these important skills, this seminar will study data collection, organization, visualization, and analysis methods, as well as how to interpret, use, and apply the results of analysis, while interpreting empirical research in commerce, economics, and management. In addition, data exercises will use R (statistical analysis software) to develop basic programming skills.

Activities

In the second year, students learn academic writing, how to create presentation materials, and statistics and data analysis using Excel. In the third year, students learn statistics and data analysis using R, web scraping, and causal inference (randomized controlled trials, natural experiments, etc.). In the fourth year, students will collect, organize, visualize, and analyze data according to their own interests and write an academically valuable graduation research thesis. As part of seminar activities, students will also participate in research presentations and prize essay contests with other seminars both inside and outside the university.

Student Voices

4th year Department of Business Administration student
From the second to fourth year, there was a gradual learning process, and I was glad that I was able to gradually learn from the basics to applications. I was able to understand how important it is to make decisions based on data, not just experience and intuition. I also think that the strong support from seniors is one of the attractions of this seminar.

3rd year student Department of Economics
Before joining the seminar, I was not even sure how to operate Excel. I never imagined myself getting data by scraping a year later (to be honest, the weekly assignments were hard...lol). I really like the atmosphere where we can exchange opinions frankly about anything, both in and outside of the seminar.

2nd year Department of Commerce student
The fact that I could take part in research presentations and paper contests as part of the seminar activities was what made me decide to join the seminar. I would like to grow as a person, just like my seniors who won the Grand Prize and Excellence Prize at the seminar competition.
